WHAT IS EMF?

EMF is an abbreviation for Electromagnetic Fields. Overhead power lines, motors, microwave ovens, two-way radios, power tools, and even home wiring all produce electromagnetic fields.

WHAT IS EMI?

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is a phenomenon that may occur when an electronic device, such as a cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator, is exposed to an electromagnetic field. It is interference with the proper functioning of an electronic device.  Any device that has electronic circuitry is potentially susceptible to EMI.

WHY EMF TESTING IS REQUIRED?

EMF Testing – If you are a heart-device patient, you may find your device at risk of interference around high-voltage overhead power lines, radio transmission towers, electric power tools, portable two-way radios, large AC and small DC motors and so on. In the workplace  you may request an Electromagnetic Field Interference (EMI) survey (also called a site survey) of your workplace.  Our EMF testing consultant can conduct a site survey of your entire work facility or even a single piece of equipment.

SOURCES OF EMI IN THE WORKPLACE

  • High Voltage Overhead Power Lines and Busbars
  • Motors (AC and DC)
  • Industrial Magnets
  • Live electric circuits
  • Electric Arc Welding (MIG and TIG)
  • Diesel Generators
  • Gas Turbine Generators
  • Forklift Charging Cable

    TYPES OF WORKPLACE MEASUREMENTS:

    • Power Frequency: E-field strength
    • Static or DC Currents: B-field strength
    • Power Frequency and Modulated Magnetic Fields: H-field strength (B-field)
    • Radiofrequency or High Frequency: RF-field strength:
    • Conducted Electric fields

What Steps Can Be Taken to Reduce EMF Exposure?

Based on our findings, we may recommend several steps to reduce EMF exposure, such as:

      • Relocating or shielding equipment that emits high EMFs.
      • Increasing the distance between EMF sources and areas where people spend significant time.
      • Implementing engineering controls to reduce EMF emissions.

Why Should EMF Testing Be Done?

If you have an employee with a medical implant like a pacemaker, defibrillator, insulin pump or deep brain stimulator, you may want to test their workplace.  If you are a homeowner near a high voltage power line or close to a cell tower, you may want to insure the health and well-being of you and your family.
